What is it concerning dessert that creates us delighted, something about our preferred form of sugar that satisfies? Heading out to an expensive restaurant and choosing your favorite yum right after a delectable meal is pretty lovely, but it feels even better to prepare and serve something up to family and friends that takes their socks off, moving them to some scrumptious place of culinary ecstasy.
One person might love chocolate and caramel, while someone else gravitates to berries or something that isn’t quite as rich and decadent. Either way, when you’re thinking about dessert for your next gathering or a guilty pleasure to make at the end of a hard week, we’ve put some tempting sweets into the following five categories to help you brainstorm and choose something that will hit the spot.
Classics. German chocolate cake. Soft, dense, moist carrot cake. A robust, rich cheesecake with a nutty crust and fresh berry sauce. Banana splits. And ummmm, hello! Pie. Let’s mention it again. Pie! Pie! Pie! Banana cream, cherry, apple, lemon, chocolate, pecan, rhubarb custard, berry, coconut cream, pumpkin, or fresh peach. Can you really go wrong here? And, really, let’s just go get a container of whipped cream for added joy and inspiration, too.
Chocolate. The perfect chocolate chip cookie that has just the right balance of chew and snap. The recipe for chocolate sheet cake that has been handed down ever since your great-grandmother.
Something cool. Sometimes you just need a refreshing alternative when it’s hot outside. What may be better than old-fashioned homemade ice cream? (There’s nothing quite like the nostalgia of the whine from the ice cream maker as it’s turning, too.) Or, maybe you’d just rather go to the store and grab some Tillamook. Either way, that frosty, creamy goodness is pretty divine. Make shakes! Enjoy root beer floats! Relax with an ice cream cake! Life is short, and if ice cream brings you joy, sometimes you just gotta capitalize on that.
Something fruity. And when you want something fruity, there are great combos all throughout the year. How about strawberry shortcake or a lemon blueberry pound cake with whipped cream and strawberries on top in the springtime?
Cuz sometimes you want something sweet, but you don’t want to overdo it. Chocolate covered strawberries. And don’t forget that classic mix of graham cracker, marshmallow, and some good chocolate for a delicious little s’more.
Ummmm … so yeah, did any of you check out this and end up salivating? Think Bill Murray in What About Bob (“I need, I need, I need, I need!”). Yup, kind of like that.
