A progressive dinner (or safari dinner in the UK) is a dinner party where the individuals move from one location to the next, with a new course being offered at each location. This can either be done by visiting several restaurants, done in individuals homes, or a combination of methods. The first visit will usually be for appetizers, but it does not have to be done in this fashion.
You could also start out with finger food, such as crackers and drinks before moving on to appetizers. At this point, you might move on to a dinner at a new location, or a second appetizer, such as a soup or salad. Eventually you move on to the main course. This is your standard dinner fare, and usually it is served by the person who created the event. After dinner, the guests will then move on to another location which will usually feature some type of desert. There are several variants of the progressive dinner.
You could have several small meals, or split several people up among several different locations, only to converge at one central location at some point in the evening. One option might be to have each course a mystery, with each guest not knowing what type of cuisine they are going to try next. A great deal of planning and preparation goes into a progressive dinner. One thing you do not want to have to worry about is getting your guests from one location to the next.
